FULL TIME STAFF ATTORNEY: FORECLOSURE PREVENTION

OFFICE LOCATION: The position will serve both Nassau and Suffolk Counties

Nassau/Suffolk Law Services has just received funding to provide legal services in the aid of homeowners who are facing foreclosure. This position is part of a joint venture with the Empire Justice Center and Long Island Housing Services. The services will include direct representation in foreclosure actions, assistance in post-foreclosure evictions, commencement of affirmative actions for violations of Federal or State consumer lending laws and mortgage counseling services. The legal services will also include education and training to lay advocates from public and private social service organizations on mortgage foreclosure issues, predatory lending practices and deed theft scams, and development of an information bank of lenders, mortgage brokers and "foreclosure rescue" scam actors.

Nassau/Suffolk Law Services is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to low-income households. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the provision of legal services to low income clients.

START DATE: IMMEDIATE

SALARY: $36.500 D.O.E.

REQUIREMENTS: Admission to the New York State Bar. Those who have passed the Bar Examination and are pending admission will also be considered. Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred.

SOCIAL WORKER-  DAVID PROJECT

OFFICE LOCATION: Islandia
   
For assignment to a specialized unit which provides free legal services to HIV+ individuals and their families.

DUTIES:  The social worker will work closely with attorneys in assisting HIV+ parents in planning for the future care of their children.  Focus will be on providing support and counseling, including group and individual work, and assisting the families in accessing the services they need.   Advocacy regarding issues including, but not limited to, public entitlements, housing and family law is an important component of this position.  Interdisciplinary collaboration, community outreach, speaking engagements and work with community-based organizations are also an integral part of the social work position.  Supervision of undergraduate and graduate social work interns will be expected. 

REQUIREMENTS: An M.S.W. degree from an accredited school of social work is required.   New York State certification must be either current or candidate must be willing to acquire.  Must have completed, or be willing to complete, Seminar In Field Instruction and be willing to ultimately supervise social work interns. A strong interest in working with the HIV-infected population is required as is an interest in advocacy and the legal process.  Fluency in Spanish and/or Creole is preferred.

FULL TIME STAFF ATTORNEY

OFFICE LOCATION: Hempstead, NY

STAFF ATTORNEY: For assignment to the Welfare Unit, which provides legal services and representation in matters related to Public Assistance, Medicaid and Food Stamps. In addition, the position will include responsibilities of a telephone hotline and legal education program designed to provide technical assistance to clients so that they can handle their own legal problems.

DUTIES: Representation of eligible clients in administrative hearings and before the courts. Provide advice and advocacy services via telephone. Provide community education through clinics, workshops and trainings to clients and lay advocates. The staff attorney will be required to maintain case records in the office's computerized case management system.

START DATE: IMMEDIATE

SALARY: $36,500 DOE

REQUIREMENTS: Admission to the New York State Bar. Applicants who have passed the Bar Examination and are pending admission will also be considered. Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus. Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may also be considered.
