| Legal Services: The Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Pro Bono ProjectNassau/Suffolk Law Services operates a nationally lauded pro bono program with the Bar Association of Nassau County and the Suffolk County Bar Association. Established in 1981, the program provides legal representation in civil cases for individuals meeting federal poverty guidlines. In Nassau it is called the Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) and in Suffolk, the Pro Bono Project (PBP). Volunteer Lawyers Project and Pro Bono Project: The purpose of these projects is to supplement the civil legal services provided by Law Services' staff with volunteer assistance from the private bar. The Project staff attempts to refer to private attorneys a wide variety of cases which Law Services cannot take due to a lack of capacity. The Projects will also refer some clients with family law matters whom we cannot help to the Modest Means Panel - private attorneys associated with the Nassau or Suffolk County Bar associations who will accept these cases for a reduced fee. These projects are funded in part by The Nassau County Bar Association and The Suffolk County Bar Association as well as by The Legal Services Corporation. For information, potential Nassau County clients should phone 516-292-8299. |
