Nassau Suffolk Law Services is excited to host the Name Change Project in partnership with Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF). Please join us on June 3, 2021, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM to learn how to provide legal name change services to low-income transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary people.

For many transgender and gender non-conforming or non-binary people, securing a legal name change is an important step toward making their legal identities match their lived experience. A lack of appropriate identity documents can deter people from applying for jobs, school, and public benefits, and can lead to discrimination. But securing a legal name change can be a challenging experience, involving interaction with the court system and judges that is foreign to many people. Providing people with adequate legal representation ensures that people successfully complete the process and move forward with their lives.

Participants in the training will learn foundational vocabulary and terminology, best practices for working with transgender clients, and substantive name change procedures on Long Island. After completing this training, attorneys can be assigned pro bono cases through NSLS, which will be partnering with TLDEF as a destination for their referrals.

TLDEF screens all clients before referral and provides training, name change manual, templates, and additional support from start to finish. These are discreet cases and great for volunteers of all backgrounds, including summer associates, transactional attorneys, and in-house counsel. The most important requirement is an interest in helping and supporting low-income TGNCNB communities.
