FULL-TIME PARALEGAL POSITION AVAILABLE – HEMPSTEAD OFFICE
Overview: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing
free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake, including eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, education, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
JOB DESCRIPTION: NSLS has an immediate opening in our Hempstead office for a full-time paralegal in the Senior Citizen Law Project.
DUTIES: The paralegal will screen all calls and conduct initial intake interviews. Under the supervision of the unit’s Supervising Attorney and Staff Attorneys, the paralegal will also provide advice, counsel, referrals and brief services to seniors, provide advice and referrals to agencies and others calling or visiting the unit for assistance, provide attorneys with case and litigation support; help conduct community outreach and education for seniors and providers of services to seniors, create and update community educational and training materials, input and maintain records in internal and external case management systems.
START DATE: Immediately
SALARY: DOE, union scale with excellent benefits.
REQUIREMENTS: Paralegal training, college degree or appropriate prior experience; excellent communication and writing skills; strong attention to detail and organizational ability to prioritize and multi-task; demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program and the ability to work with the staff attorneys assigned to the Project; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred but not mandatory.
