FULL-TIME STAFF ATTORNEY – DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UNIT
OVERVIEW: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
POSITION: Fulltime staff attorney for its Domestic Violence Unit Housing Unit in its Suffolk County Islandia Office. Duties include the representation of victims of domestic violence in Suffolk County Family Court, Supreme Court, and administrative hearings. Issues may include orders of protection, custody, visitation, child and spousal support, divorce, and lease termination pursuant to relevant domestic violence related to statute. A general knowledge of public benefits law preferred. Participation in community legal education and outreach is also expected. The staff attorney’s duties will include: maintain client and case data, time records and statistical information in the office’s computerized case management system.
REQUIREMENTS: Nassau/Suffolk Law Services is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to low-income households. Admission to the New York State Bar or applicants who have passed the Bar Examination and are awaiting admission, is preferred.
SALARY: $56,958.00 (D.O.E. subject to collective bargaining agreement)
