POSITION AVAILABLE: Consumer Debt Law Project Staff Attorney (with Higher Education Debt focus)

OVERVIEW: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Duties entail representation of low-income debtors in consumer law matters, including but not limited to higher education debt, loans, credit cards, medical debt and student loan issues. The Staff Attorney will handle the case from intake through investigation, negotiation, trial and appeal as necessary. NSLS has partnered with the Community Service Society (CSS) to provide legal services with an initiative called the Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program (EDCAP). EDCAP is focused on helping consumers navigate their student loan debt. This position will be focused on providing legal services through EDCAP. EDCAP duties will include providing over the phone, remote video conferencing and in-person assistance to individuals who need help with higher education debt, including selecting an appropriate repayment plan, loan consolidation, applying for forgiveness and discharge programs, avoiding, or getting out of default, and much more; Provide trainings and presentations to consumers and advocates, as needed; Prepare training materials and fact sheets, as needed. Staff attorney is responsible for maintaining required case files, client data and all statistical information as required. Participation in community legal education as needed and other responsibilities identified by their supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS: NSLS looking for an attorney who is committed to public service and has a background or high interest in issues related to higher education debt. Admission to New York State Bar. Applicants who have passed the State Bar and are pending admission will also be considered. Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may be considered. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program.

SALARY: $60,458+ DOE union scale with excellent benefits
