OPEN POSITIONS: 2 FULL-TIME-INTAKE/LANGUAGE ACCESS PARALEGALS
OVERVIEW: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
LOCATION: Nassau/Suffolk County
DUTIES INCLUDE: We are seeking to hire a bilingual (English and Spanish) paralegal to assist our staff attorneys in representing low-income and disabled clients, especially though not exclusively those who are more proficient in Spanish. The paralegal will handle intake at the beginning of the case, and then remain involved with the case and client, communicating consistently so that our client is fully informed about the progress of their case at all times, and has the opportunity to ask questions. An ability to explain legal processes in both languages, orally and in writing, with the assistance of the attorney, is necessary. Subject matter is broad, potentially including but not limited to housing, benefits, consumer debt and family law. The position may involve accompanying the client and attorney to court as well as oral and written communication. This is an exciting position for anyone with an interest in assisting vulnerable people and advancing social justice.
REQUIREMENTS: Nassau Suffolk Law Services is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to low-income households. Paralegal training or college degree or appropriate prior experience. Excellent oral communication and writing skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, strong attention to detail and organizational ability to prioritize and multitask. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is necessary.
SALARY: From – $37,758.00 D.O.E.
