Overview: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
Job Description: The Social Worker will work within an interdisciplinary setting. Supervision will be provided by the Director of Social Work as well as the Supervising Attorney. The duties of the Social Worker shall include: assisting clients in extreme emotional crisis; assisting vulnerable clients, including those facing homelessness, loss of income and/or lack of food, and those who cannot navigate necessary systems alone; providing resources and referrals; informal advocacy; community education where feasible and appropriate; supervision of
undergraduate and/or graduate interns; working with community agencies and attending
community meetings; short-term supportive counseling; conducting home visits when appropriate and necessary; conducting interviews and initial assessments of clients' needs; and performing necessary administrative tasks. The Social Worker will have a specific responsibility of working within a specialized unit which provides services to HIV+ individuals and their families. The Social Worker, with these clients, will assist by providing family stabilization support services.
Requirements: An M.S.W. degree from an accredited school of social work. New York State License must be either current or candidate must be willing to acquire. Must have completed, or be willing to complete, Seminar in Field Instruction. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English required. A strong interest in advocacy is important. Experience working in the field of HIV/AIDS will be viewed favorably.

Salary: DOE, union scale with excellent benefits
