Awards

Many staff members are outstanding experts in their field and have been recognized at a state and national level for the quality and critical importance of their work.

In August, 2020, the Nassau County Legislature named Re-Entry Project staff attorney Ray DeLeo "Young Attorney of the Year" for his "exemplary service" to the community. The Legislature cited DeLeo's "leadership and dedication to enriching the lives of others" in giving the award.

Congratulations to Angela Lampe, Social Worker in our Disability/Health Unit. On Dec 2, 2019, World AIDS Day, the NuHealth HIV Program honored her work in recognition of her community involvement with the David Project. Ms. Lampe was presented the award by Dr. Janice Verley, Dir. NUMC HIV Program.

Congratulations to Nora Gonzalez, a paralegal in NSLS’ Public Benefits Unit, who was awarded the Unsung Hero recognition at Long Island Business News’ Leadership in Law Awards. She was joined by a table of NSLS colleagues who attended the gala on November 21, 2019, in support of this well-deserved recognition!

Susanna Laruccia, our attorney in the Veterans Rights Project, was honored at the Nassau County Bar Association’s Annual dinner on June 17, 2019 for her outstanding service to the community. Congratulations, Susanna!

On October 30, 2018, James Denson was awarded with the 2018 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) Champion Award, for his impact helping others in the Long Island community over his 27-year tenure at NSLS.

On October 25, 2018, Carly Sommers, NSLS’ Reentry Project Attorney was recognized by the New York County Lawyers Association, New York State Bar Association and New York State Unified Court System’s Office for Justice Initiatives for the pro bono work she did in 2017 in the Brooklyn Housing Court and the Queens Consumer Debt Court.

At the Suffolk County Bar Association’s May 7, 2018 Annual Meeting, Ellen Krakow, Suffolk Pro Bono Coordinator, was presented with an Award of Recognition in appreciation for her “exemplary service and commitment to the SCBA and dedication to the Suffolk Academy of Law’s Continuing Education Program.” The award was presented by Patricia Meisenheimer, President of the SCBA. Congratulations Ellen Krakow, Pro Bono Project Coordinator, on being awarded the Legal Advocate of the Year Award at the Long Island Women's Conference on April 1, 2017. Touro Law Center held its 21st Goods and Services Auction on March 11, 2015. As part of festivities, the law school also recognizes attorneys for their commitment and dedication to pro bono and public interest work through the Public Interest Attorney of the Year Program. Among the recipients, Maria Dosso, Law Services’ Director of Communications and Volunteer Services accepted the award from Dean of Touro Law Center Patricia Salkin.

Our Executive Director was recognized by Hofstra Law School’s Public Justice Foundation as the 2016 PJF Outstanding Alumnus for his extraordinary commitment and dedication to public service.

On November 17, 2016, the Long Island Business News honored Nassau Law Services with the Non Profit of the Year award. Jeffrey Seigel accepts the award on behalf of the firm.

Congratulations to Sheila Johnson, Law Services Director of Development and Government Affairs for receiving the prestigious Public Service Award from Touro’s Black Law Students Association. The Suffolk County Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts held an awards ceremony for Women’s History Month. In April, 2011, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano presented a proclamation to our legal staff for their dedicated work in our Protection and Advocacy Projects which provide legal assistance to developmentally disabled individuals (PADD) as well as legal assistance in equal opportunity and discrimination cases to physically disabled individuals (PAIR). The Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Greater New York City Affiliate honored the PLAN Project staff, Denise Snow and Kelly Murray, in recognition of the legal assistance that the Project provides to hundreds of individuals affected by cancer, May 2009.

Suffolk County Minority Health Summit honored Denise Snow for her “dedication, commitment and support of community based initiatives and minority health improvement projects in Suffolk,” October 2008.

Douglas Ruff was the recipient of the prestigious Denison Ray award presented by the New York State Bar Association for his extraordinary commitment as a public service attorney providing zealous and skilled representation to low income and disadvantaged clients. Law Services was also the recipient of a cash grant as a result of this award, 1995.
